5 Dog ID Tags That Don't Jingle

Sick of hearing your pup's dog tags clink together as she goes about her day? So are we.

When I first brought my Moxie home, the sound of his dog tags clinking together as he ate, played, and made our apartment his personal playground was a welcome noise. A sound that screamed, "WE CONVINCED THE LANDLADY! AND NOW WE HAVE A DOG!" 

Four years later, it's not quite as endearing. And I can't imagine how the parents of multiple dogs keep their sanity hearing several sets of tags jingling like jailer's keys all day.

Tag silencers are one way to solve the problem, but a few years ago, I discovered the slip-on collar tags from Boomerang (pictured below), attached them to a supple leather tag collar from Sit Up N' Beg, and never looked back.

1. Boomerang Tags' Collar Tags: As mentioned above, this is the method I prefer. Moxie is now on his second tag collar in three years (he wears a martingale on top of it for walks), but the Boomerang tag hardware remains the same. I like that you can slip it off one collar and onto the next if you're one of those fashionable multi-collar-owning pet parents. The tags run $9.20 to $10.99; collars are also available.

2. Mimi Green's Engraved Collar Buckles: How smart is this? A belt buckle that doubles as a dog ID! When I first saw these dog tags by Mimi Green, I had one of those "Crap, I wish I'd invented these" moments. You can personalize yours with up to 15 characters per line. The buckles are a metal and plastic hybrid, and $29 gets you tag plus nylon collar with your choice of 18 colors.

3. Nylon ScruffTags' Personalized Dog Collar: Similar to the Mimi Green collars, these collars are made of hardy nylon webbing. Instead of an engraving on the buckle, though, they offer a built-in tag reminiscent of the Boomerang Tags. These collars ($24 each) feature a side-release buckle and are made in the U.S.

4. Doctors Foster and Smith Brass Nameplates: These run $3.99 to $4.99 and come with rivets so you can attach them to your collar. Doctors Foster and Smith also have their own line of collars, and can attach the nameplate to them for you if you leave a note with your order.

5. Personalized Italian Leather Collars from DogIDs: How pretty are these? I almost want to wear the light blue one myself! (Only kind of kidding.) These collars feature two layers of leather stiched together -- the outer layer is water-resistant and colorfast while the inner layer is an extra-soft tan leather. U.S.-made and $49.
